  1. Probably one of the most heart wrenching memoirs I ve ever read So glad this one had a happy ending though The only reason I knocked a star off was because she never said what happened to Millie and Mary Ann or if she didn t know Or if she ever got in touch with her mom when she finally got away and I was also curious about her youngest brother Robbie.

  2. This is a book that clearly Frances Grubb had to write, but I found some of it bordered on unbelievable not the violence and abuse, which are all too commonly real even in the most upstanding families, or the effects of alcoholism on a family, but in the way Jesus and Frances faith is woven through her childhood Young children especially terrorized children do not naturally come to Jesus just because there s a Bible lying in the floorboard of the car, and the author did not believably convey how [...]

  3. A girl learns to become invisible, to look the other way, to say nothing when a curious stranger asks if she s okay To lie To expect nothing, not even from relatives. To cry without tears. To pray silently. When she is fourteen, and weary, a girl begins to wish she were dead.Reading this description from the publisher s site, one tends to think that it s an exaggeration Even though we all know that evil exists in the world, and some of that evil exists in the guise of a father or a mother But reall [...]

  4. From the book Get out here, now, or I m gonna kill you he hollered.Little girls are hardwired to hold their daddies in high esteem, so it comes as a shock the first time a daughter feels the back of her daddy s hand across her face or watches him punch and kick her mother to within an inch of her life. How could this be Her older sisters teach her how to survive, even when he comes for her in the night.A girl learns to become invisible, to look the other way, to say nothing when a curious strang [...]

  5. Rarely does a book get under my skin in the way that Cruel Harvest A Memoir has done I will never forget it It is a raw, haunting tale of Fran Elizabeth Grubb s life as the daughter of an abusive, alcoholic migrant worker up to her bold escape at the age of fourteen and her greatest desire to find members of her family to mend their relationships The book mercifully flashes between her adulthood as each brother and sister is found to her memories of the life they endured before they scattered. It [...]

  6. Cruel Harvest by Fran Elizabeth Grubb is an author s journey from victim to survivor The author handles a tough topic with honesty without being depressing As a survivor of abuse myself I could relate to having difficult relationships with siblings as an adult This is the first book I read that really deals with all the emotions, heartache and other issues that come with abuse such as having relationships with other family members What sold me as a great example were that family saw Fran as bein [...]

  7. Unbelievable Child AbuseThis is a true story written by a survivor of her father s viciousness and torture The story commenced when Frances was fourteen years old and she has run away from her father Broadus, who would probably beat her to death if he caught up with her The story was told in a series of flashbacks from the present when she was close to forty years old and the wife of Wayne, after a disastrous first marriage with an alcoholic with whom she had two children In essence, the story b [...]

  8. Cruel Harvest is a memoir written by Fran Elizabeth Grubb and in she describes the most violent and soul wrenching experiences that no child should have to endure To say she rose from despair and poverty is an understatement.Grubb recounts the life that her mother, siblings, and herself endured at the hands of an abusive and alcoholic husband and father His uncontrolled anger would send him into fits of rage that would end up with one member of the family or another being beaten, harassed, belit [...]

  9. A MUST READ Some stories hit you like lightning, while others slowly seep into your mind and soul with a permanence that s hard to shake Cruel Harvest was such a story for me.Based on some reviews I thought this would be a very graphic story, and while some passages are explicit, Fran Grubb has opted not to sensationalize these very traumatic events in her life She tells her story straight from the heart from page one and slowly grips you with an ensemble of endearing siblings you ll never forge [...]

  10. What a torturous, heart wrenching account of cruelty but I am so glad I read it The book is well written and the audio is beautifully narrated. The faith and perseverance of this little girl was an inspiring, humbling account I am a better person for having read this.I wish I could meet the author, give her a big hug and be her friend.

  11. Cruel Harvest was a very tough read simply because it is so graphic in describing the abuse the family endured I wasn t expecting that and had to stop just to collect myself and continue reading a lot.

  12. I read this book as a favor to a good friend who said, You have to read it this is just what I grew up with The further I read, the horrified I became at what the author and my friend had to endure And the it made me wonder who I might know right now who is going through the same sort of unspeakable tortures This book is an abrupt, breathtaking eye opener.

  13. I spotted this book at the library a while ago and eyed it for months before finally taking the plunge I suspected that it would be really sad it is , make me feel depressed it did , but still be worth the read it was This is a book that the author clearly needed to write as part of her healing process, and I m thankful that she s been so open and vulnerable.

  14. So disturbingn t stop thinking about this book and these real life people I cried with Frances several times I think touching also to listen to the author s voice tell her own story with the audio version Be warned, if you have a heart you will not get away from this story unscathed

  15. Completely, utterly blown away I was up until midnight two nights in a row totally sucked in A great read alike for The Sound of Gravel or The Glass Castle.

  16. I don t usually read memoirs, but I thought I would give this one a try, and I am glad that I did Fran lives with her siblings, mother and her father They live in poverty and are always moving around a lot Fran lives in fear of her father, but she never expresses hatred toward him, even though he is mentally and physically abusive to all of his children and his wife Fran and her sisters had to suffer sexual abuse from their father She constantly lived in fear wondering what abuse she would suffe [...]

  17. The story is Mrs Grubb s memoir of her life growing up with an abusive father This was a hard book to read I ve always had a very tender spot in my heart for children that have to endure abuse I never had to and am so thankful to my Heavenly Father for his grace in my life Mrs Grubb s story was shocking, appalling and full of hope Her journey led her all over the country and down many dark paths There were times of light in her life though that made all the difference to her story Most interesti [...]

  18. It s funny to say that you loved a book about horrific child abuse, but I did I believe it s because, despite the subject matter, there is a message of hope throughout We know that Fran Grubb grew up and was able to face her own demons She healed and found a man who treated her with kindness And she uses her life as a teachable moment to inspire others.Fran s story is similar to my own mother s Both grew up with violent, alcoholic fathers Fran s family were migrant workers, who went wherever the [...]

  19. Cruel Harvest is the moving autobiography of Fran Elizabeth Grubb, a child of migrant workers She not only tells her compelling story of constant moving and working in the fields but also of an unbelievable life of extreme neglect at the hands of her alcoholic father The book is written in both the far and near past, intertwining the days of her childhood with her reunions with family members as an adult woman.Fran had very few normal moments in her childhood She rarely attended school, spent ma [...]

  20. I cannot remember a time when I have been absolutely horrified reading a book Cruel Harvest was probably one of the most disturbing books I may ever read in my lifetime I knew it wouldn t be good, in the sense of subject matter, but the father that Fran Grubb writes about is a terrifying mixture of demon, madman and monster At times I found myself wondering if he was possessed, schizophrenic, bipolar or all of the above Whatever he was, I was absolutely sick at times, reading the terror he infli [...]

  21. This book wasn t an easy read, yet I flew through it It was painful and beautiful all at once and it is an amazing story of triumph over deep tragedy I honestly passed up this book than once I was intrigued, but repelled by the horrors of abuse experienced and described by the author In any case, I knew what I was getting into when I finally took the plunge Honestly, a book like this could go either way it could be a tale of triumph or it could be deeply painful and depressing Fortunately, thou [...]

  22. This is an exceptional book If you want to read something relating to the courage and stamina of an individual, this book will do it for you It is about a young girl who was battered by an alcoholic father but who, through her shear will power and faith, managed to overcome the worse conditions I have ever read of concerning a child in the U.S.I am not a religious person but without faith I don t think this child woman could have made it through life It is the story of her search for her family, [...]

  23. Cruel Harvest, by Fran Elizabeth Grubb, is a horrible book to read No, not the book itself but the dreadful story Ms Grubb tells It s a true story of a young family all victims of the abuse of one very sick and evil man their father and husband It was a difficult book to read as it deals with the most evil of abuses verbal, physical and sexual Grubb tells the story of growing up travelling from farm to farm to work picking cotton all to feed her father s alcoholism Her mother and siblings were c [...]

  24. It was a heart wrenching book which made me mad most of the time but was amazed how she came through her ordeal a sane person with such a forgiving heart I was mad at everyone who failed this family but then I had to remember that this was a time when you didn t get involved in a man s business People didn t want to think that this depravity went on and so they turned blind eyes to it There were some who did and tried to help but there was only so much they could do I see how faith and a love of [...]

  25. God bless people with the courage to write about the pain and shame in their childhoods Fran Elizabeth Grubb s childhood was an unending nightmare no child should ever have to endure, but endure she did She not only endured but triumphed. One of seven children, she traveled across the south picking cotton with her parents Her father was a cruel alcoholic who got meaner when he d been drinking which was every day He beat his wife and children for any or no reason and sexually abused his daughters [...]

  26. Loved this book Well written memoir by Frances Grubb How she survived her childhood and learned to live and forgive is unbelievable Everyone who thinks they had a rough childhood because they were denied the brands of clothes other kids wore, or had to wear hand me downs should read this book Those who think they were mistreated because they had to work for what they wanted should read this book And those who think they were abused because they were spanked when they misbehaved should read this [...]
